Seniors represent one of the highest emergency risk groups in the country. Seniors can be sight, hearing, or mobility impaired resulting in a longer reaction time in the event of an emergency.
The following is list of safety tips for senior citizens:
- Install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
- If using space heaters, make sure they have an automatic shut off device if they fall over. Keep space heaters at least 3’ away from combustible materials such as blankets etc.
- Practice safe cooking practices such as never leaving the stove unattended while cooking.
- Have a fire extinguisher in the home and know how to use it. Small, lightweight extinguishers are available for home use.
- Never smoke in bed and be cautious of smoking materials in the home
- Know at least two ways out of the home
- Know when to evacuate or when “protect in place” (stay in your home).
- If living alone, have a neighborhood plan
- Keep a three day supply of water and non-perishable food
- If the power is out, listen to a battery powered radio for emergency information
