Residential Smoke and CO Alarm Program

Central Fire Protection District is currently conducting a residential smoke and CO alarm program.  The program will provide education for residents on home fire safety and explain the benefit of home smoke and CO alarms.

National fire statistics show that fire fatalities in homes are where there are no smoke or CO alarms present.  Properly installed and maintained, smoke and CO alarms can provide early warning necessary for family members to be able to escape from a home fire when it is still relatively small or when Carbon Monoxide is present.

Fire Prevention Division personnel will be visiting your neighborhood to conduct home fire safety inspections.  The purpose of the inspection will be to assess the condition of smoke and CO alarms in your home.  If you currently do not have a smoke or CO alarm, one can be provided and installed at no cost to you.  Batteries will also be available if your smoke or CO alarm battery requires replacement.

Central Fire Protection District would like the opportunity to conduct a smoke and CO alarm inspection of your home.  Please contact the Fire Prevention staff at (831) 479-6843 if you would be interested in participating in this free service.  Please join us to help spread the word about fire safety in our community.

Below is a short video from CalFire explaining the importance of installed and properly maintained smoke alarms.

FREE SMOKE AND CO ALARMS
Do you have working smoke and CO alarms in your home?

Central Fire District can provide district residents with free smoke and CO alarms and install them, if necessary, at no cost to you through our community smoke and CO alarm program.
Although 95 percent of American homes have smoke alarms many do not work due to neglect. This means that many homes and the families that live in them are unnecessarily at risk. Peak hours for residential fires are between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, when most families are sleeping. A properly maintained smoke alarm can provide a warning during the early stages of a fire, giving the occupants time to escape unharmed.
Maintenance of smoke and COalarms is fast and easy:Test your smoke and CO alarms once a week by pressing the test button.
  • Replace the batteries in your smoke and CO alarms at least once a year. Pick a date that you can remember and mark your calendar as a reminder. Don’t wait for the low battery alarm to remind you. The battery may fail before you have a chance to change it making your alarm inoperative.
  • Vacuum your alarm regularly to dust and dirt particles that may accumulate.
  • Replace your smoke and CO alarms about every 10 years. Over time, alarms lose their sensitivity after being exposed to dust, dirt and impurities in the air.

Smoke and CO alarms are only effective if they are installed in the proper locations and maintained regularly.  If you have any questions about the smoke and CO alarm program or need assistance inspecting your alarms, feel free to contact the Fire Prevention division at (831) 479-6843.
